In today’s shifting trade environment, delivering cargo to the port is no longer enough. Businesses demand end-to-end control, resilience and simplicity, especially when the inland leg of the journey presents as many challenges as opportunities.
In the webinar, “Beyond the port: Delivering resilience from dock to door,” we explored how Maersk’s integrated inland strategy helps you navigate complexity, reduce costs and keep your supply chain moving from origin to final delivery. Here is what we covered.
Simplifying inland transport with carrier and multi-carrier haulage
Kate Jostworth, Head of First Mile Product for Maersk North America, introduced two core inland transport services: carrier haulage and multi-carrier haulage.
- Carrier haulage (store door): Ideal for customers moving cargo on a Maersk bill of lading, this bundled service combines ocean and inland logistics into a single invoice. Maersk manages drayage, chassis and terminal appointments, providing predictable costs and reducing the risk of delays. Since Maersk controls the entire move, detention only begins once the container is delivered to your facility, giving you a smoother and more reliable delivery experience.
- Multi-carrier haulage (container yard): Designed for flexibility, this solution supports cargo moving on any ocean carrier’s bill of lading. You can use market shifts to optimize trucking costs while consolidating vendors at the inland level.
It really comes down to how you want to manage your supply chain. We provide options so customers can choose consistency, cost control or flexibility—whatever best fits their business model.
Strategic depot solutions to unlock agility
As demand rises and warehousing space tightens, depot storage is becoming a key part of supply chain planning. Maersk offers inland and port-adjacent depot solutions that let you:
- Hold cargo in sealed containers.
- Delay final delivery until your supply chain or inventory space becomes available.
- Minimize costs compared to storage at ports or inland container yards.
You can use depot services with any ocean bill of lading. Our bonded depot network also supports shipments facing tariff complexity or customs delays. On average, customers using our depot solutions see up to 40% savings in demurrage and 62% in detention fees.
Transload and cross-dock: Designed for speed, flexibility and control
Matthew Koren, who leads Technical Sales for inland warehousing, outlined how Maersk’s transload and cross-dock capabilities support faster distribution and smarter cargo flow:
- Transload: Moves goods directly from ocean containers to domestic trailers. Best for single-destination shipments that need to move quickly.
- Cross-dock: More complex redistribution of cargo to multiple destinations with real-time visibility and sorting at the SKU level.
- DC bypass: A hybrid model where cargo is pre-assigned to destinations, stored briefly, then shipped directly to final locations.
All facilities are equipped with advanced technology, 24/7 drop-and-hook access and value-added services like labeling, scanning and quality control checks. These services are scalable, agile and can be customized to fit your network.
Built for resilience: Decarbonization, visibility and scale
Both speakers highlighted Maersk’s ongoing investment in a resilient and more energy efficient inland network:
- Electric trucking: With over 70 battery-electric trucks operating in Southern California, Maersk is reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions to support your decarbonization targets. Our ECO Delivery Inland product’s GHG emissions reduction processes and methodology are third-party verified in accordance with ISAE 3000 and ISAE 3410 standards.
- Digital visibility: EDI integration gives you end-to-end visibility, automated reporting and a single point of contact across warehousing and inland operations.
- North American scale: With over 100,000 unique inland routings, 200+ trucking partners and a coast-to-coast depot and warehouse footprint, Maersk can support any shipment, regardless of size and complexity.
