Caroma keeps Australian homes and buildings supplied with the fixtures people rarely think about until they fail. Behind that simple promise sits a supply chain that has to hold up under pressure.

As customer expectations rose and global trade grew harder to predict, the market-leading GWA Group brand wanted more than a carrier that moved boxes from port to port. It wanted visibility, tighter coordination, and a partner that could help it plan, not just ship.

That search led to Maersk. More than a year on, Caroma has sharper purchase order and shipment visibility and steadier planning across its network. It now describes the relationship as a genuine partnership rather than a transaction.

Responding to a changing supply chain

Two forces reshaped Caroma’s supply chain at once. Customers grew less patient with delays and gaps, and global trade itself became choppier and harder to forecast. The combination raised the stakes on every shipment. Caroma wanted to see its goods end to end, close the gap between the teams that plan and the teams that execute, and lean on technology to make faster, better-informed calls. The pressure was not abstract. A delayed container can hold up a builder’s schedule or leave a care facility waiting on fixtures it has already committed to install. It also wanted a different kind of relationship. The traditional model, where a shipper books freight and hopes for the best, no longer fits.

    Longer Warehousing Fits

For us, it was never about finding a freight provider. We wanted a true partner who would take ownership of outcomes and grow with our business.

Maersk recognised the pattern. What Caroma described was not unique to one company; it reflected a wider market shift, where businesses tired of juggling fragmented touchpoints wanted fewer, more accountable partners instead. Maersk’s answer was to bring ocean, inland, and digital capabilities together under one connected operating model: one partner, one view of the goods, and far less stitching together of separate providers. Rather than hand Caroma a fixed package, the team mapped its offering to how Caroma wanted to run its supply chain. Clearer accountability across the chain, long the missing piece, finally had an owner.

From Ocean Freight Provider to Integrated Supply Chain Partner

At first, Caroma saw Maersk through a narrow lens, mainly as an ocean freight provider. The conversations changed that. As the two sides talked through what was possible, Caroma began to see the wider picture: inland logistics, digital visibility, and practical support such as Flex Hub, all under one roof. Just as telling was how the engagement felt. It was personal and partnership-led, backed by senior leadership on both sides rather than left to run on autopilot. That breadth, and that level of commitment, lined up with exactly where Caroma wanted to take its supply chain.

    Enhanced Visibility and Operational Planning

More than a year in, the results speak for themselves. Service reliability is strong, and costs have grown more stable and predictable. The bigger shift is in visibility. With a clearer sight of purchase orders and shipments, Caroma can plan across its distribution network in Australia and New Zealand with far more confidence. Teams now know what is coming and when. They can line up inbound flows and labor before the goods arrive rather than scrambling after. That foresight ripples outward to the rest of the business.

Sales and operations can make commitments to customers with more confidence because the picture they are working from is closer to reality. Small frictions that once ate up a buyer’s morning, such as chasing a container or guessing at an arrival date, have largely faded into the background. People are freed to focus on the decisions that actually move the business. Neither side treats this as a finish line. Caroma and Maersk keep hunting for the next place to add value, and the collaboration that started the partnership is the same engine driving it forward.

    Building Long-Term Supply Chain Resilience

For Caroma, the foundation is set, and the more interesting work is still ahead. The business sees what it has built as solid ground to keep building on.

We see our role as more than moving goods — it’s about growing alongside Caroma, creating value across the supply chain, and enabling continuous improvement as their business evolves.

That next chapter points upstream and outward: broader planning support, closer collaboration earlier in the chain, and continued innovation. The aim is long-term supply chain resilience, not just smoother day-to-day execution. The work did not just solve a logistics problem. It gave Caroma room to keep getting better.
