The Customer
One of aquaculture’s most major players, Norwegian seafood company Mowi is renowned for being the world´s largest producer of Atlantic salmon – harvesting as much 475,000 tonnes in 2023 and claiming a global market share of approximately 20%.
The company’s adventure started in 1964 when a few pioneers started farming fish in their own back yards, but the following 60 years have seen it grow to a market leader and change in many ways – both from an organic point of view and indeed as a result of acquisitions and collaborations with other companies. Getting Mowi’s products around the world is where Maersk comes in.
The Challenge
Mowi produces high-quality, farm-raised salmon and provides its customers with a remarkable 8 million meals per day. Reaching the dinner tables of all four corners of the globe doesn’t happen without its complexities, though, which is why getting the logistics strategy right is crucial for Mowi and its goals.
In one of the company’s major farming locations, Chile, Mowi’s main challenge is to limit disruptions in the supply chain and ensure ultimate flexibility in the event of a bottleneck. Delays could, of course, lead to cargo not being stored in the correct conditions or ageing to the point of going to waste, which would have a detrimental impact on the company’s bottom line. So being able to get its products to the right markets, at the right time, in the right condition, would give Mowi a true advantage over its competitors.
The Solution
Maersk worked closely with Mowi to understand its requirements from end to end, and proposed an integrated solution for the entire supply chain that simplifies and connects everything from production (first mile and cold storage) to the final destination (landside, ocean and air transportation) - all from one place.
Supply chain management for Maersk means making logistics easier, so it handles all bookings for Mowi, integrates the company’s own systems to manage container preparation and cold storage, and finally transports cargo to ports and around the globe via ocean and air.
Air freight has been a particular area of success for Mowi and Maersk’s partnership, having built a solution that enables salmon from Chile to reach all major destinations and feed eager markets. Air services are imperative for time-sensitive cargo, especially in times disruption on the water, and the solution put in place has the potential to extend to the wider industry and contribute to reducing food waste.
Temperature-controlled cargo is among the most sensitive commodities, which is why the requirements of every individual shipment need to be assessed and adhered to in order to avoid any spoiled produce. For Mowi, cold storage solutions are in place before being loaded onto the aircraft and immediately at the final destination, while the temperature of the aircraft itself is also optimised for product freshness.
On top of this, Mowi is harnessing the potential of data to improve visibility over its cargo in transit. Maersk’s Remote Container Management (RCM) solution, powered by virtual assistant Captain Peter, enables Mowi to stay up to date on its containers’ conditions – offering real-time insights while goods are in transit.
The Result
The two companies are now working together to leave a positive footprint on the world, both across the fishing industry and global logistics. The success of the relationship relies not only on the functionality of Maersk’s global network, but also on the natural synergies between Maersk and Mowi in terms of values and the push towards a sustainable future.
Since partnering with Maersk, Mowi has expressed its appreciation for an integrated and simplified supply chain solution and also Maersk's adaptability to its needs. A long-term, strategic solution and a partner to support logistics operations was the demand from Mowi, and Maersk is demonstrating how full supply chain integration can create a path towards growth and success.
