The customer
A prominent American conglomerate engaged in the design, development, manufacture and worldwide marketing and sales of footwear, apparel, equipment, accessories and services. Over the past few years, China has been a significant driver of growth for the brand. Having generated a significant market share in the country, the company requires a reliable, trustworthy logistics partner to ensure that the seasonality of their products doesn't come with disruptions along the way.
The challenge
Around 43% of the brand’s total footwear and apparel volume comes out of Vietnam. This creates the need for efficient transportation between Vietnam and China and ensure that the products are transported as per schedule owing to seasonality. Transportation pathway between Vietnam and China is one of the critical cogs that determines the success of new product sales in China. However, in May 2022, Shanghai encountered a serious Covid-19 outbreak. The entire city went into lockdown as the government initiated a zero-tolerance policy to the disease. This was one of the most unpredictable times for ocean freight and inland transportation.
There were expectations of serious delays with product launches. The company needed to ensure a steady supply chain to help deliver products from Vietnam to Shanghai on schedule
The solution
Despite Shanghai airport (PVG) facing serious Covid-19 restrictions, the Maersk Air Freight team managed to create a strategic airline partnership and stepped out to fulfil and support commercial flight capacities. With all the necessary safety procedures initiated, passenger-belly charters were deployed to fulfil customer requests while expediting the process of cargo disinfection and custom clearance upon arrival. This ensured minimum disruptions despite a severe pandemic outbreak in the country.
The result
Due to the considerable efforts of the Maersk Air Freight team,we were able to achieve significant results:
- A total of 500 tons of shipment moved using air freight
- Transportation time improved from 24-36 hrs to 12-18 hrs
- Timely deliveries to ensure the release of products to market, helping customers align with their strategic plans
