Diversity, equity and inclusion at A.P. Moller - Maersk

Integrating the world means more than connecting global supply chains. Our purpose demands that we go all the way to connect diverse talents and perspectives in fair and inclusive workplaces where amazing individuals feel they belong.

LGBTQIA+ inclusion at Maersk

Maersk is fully committed to workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we are proud to support every employee who contributes to the success of our company. This is why we value, attract, support, and retain talented lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender and sexual orientation professionals.

We work hard to create an environment and culture where every employee feels they can bring their authentic selves and develop their full potential, mindful of the diversity of lived experiences shared by our LGBTQIA+ colleagues.

Rainbow Container World Tour

During their five-month global tour, Maersk’s Rainbow Containers have symbolised inclusion and diversity, boldly sharing with the world our stand on creating a culture where all employees, partners, and customers feel welcomed and can be themselves without judgment. Over 2022 and 2023, our rainbow container has visited over 50 different locations in total, in 2023 specifically it visited 17 locations across 10 countries, including 11 customer sites and two major events, Eurovision and the Global Fashion Summit.

Containers of hope

The containers were made available at strategic points in their journey for Maersk employees to sign and share their hopes for a future of improved diversity and inclusion.

Containers that unite

They not only serve as a symbol for the company but also for our clients too. Maersk’s clients have showed interest in the use of these rainbow containers to move their goods around the world, and during the tour the containers have visited a range of customer sites including PUMA.

“We were pleased the MAERSK rainbow container stopped by at the PUMA headquarters during our Pride Month celebrations. The initiative sparked an open discourse on what diversity and inclusion means for everyone.”

Working with the embassy model

Regulations covering LGBTQIA+ inclusion vary globally. To protect our employees and contribute to local LGBTQIA+ communities in jurisdictions where the rights of LGBTQIA+ people are not otherwise respected or protected, Maersk adopts an “embassy” model for inclusion.

Internally, the embassy model creates safe, inclusive workplaces for all of our LGBTQIA+ employees. It allows us to enforce our corporate policies for LGBTQIA+ inclusion regardless of local context, and it supports our efforts to promote tolerance and safe spaces for local employees. The ultimate goal is to create an environment in which everyone feels valued and protected, resulting in a productive and secure working environment.
