East Asia’s 2026 typhoon season has seen above-normal activity, with several severe typhoons (Bavi, Dolphin, Narra, Peilou and Chan-Hom) making landfall in a two-week period, resulting in severe flooding, congestion and delays in vessel operations throughout the region.

With warnings that typhoon Saudel could make a resurgence and weather institutions like PAGASA stating that more tropical cyclones are expected to form in the region, these impacts could last longer than initially assume. The ripple effects of the resulting schedule adjustments, congestion, and capacity constraints are being felt across the industry and wider shipping network. According to Sea Intelligence, all 14 of the region’s busiest ports are experiencing a decrease in on-time vessel arrival.

Reliability impacted

Whilst all networks in the region have seen major impacts, resulting in varying levels of cargo delays, Gemini has utilised its unique modular setup to minimise impacts as much as possible. Early numbers indicate that it remains the more reliable network.

What happens next

We are actively managing cargo flows across the network to mitigate the impact to vessel schedules and aiming to shorten waiting time in the next a few weeks. Mitigation measures are being implemented where appropriate, while operational plans continue to be adjusted to support recovery efforts and maintain the smooth flow of cargo across the network. We continue to have a strong collaborative relationship with the terminals and port groups that our vessels call and are working closely with them.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and share updates as further information becomes available. In the meantime, we suggest you assess your current logistics set-up to identify where additional flexibility and agility may be needed in the weeks ahead. This may include reviewing priority shipments, allowing additional buffer time, checking documentation readiness, and discussing alternative routings or transport options with your Maersk representative where relevant.

We appreciate your understanding and continued partnership.
