How Maersk helped strengthen Covid-19 vaccination initiatives in Indonesia
The customer
Our customer is a leading medical device manufacturer, and a pioneer of Auto Disable (AD) syringes in Indonesia, controlling over 90% of the market share. The company’s ultimate vision is to provide widespread access to safer disposable injections in the region and the rest of the world. With global Covid-19 vaccination rollouts in full swing, there is an even greater need for safe syringes to prevent the spread of communicable diseases through unclean needles.
The customer recently partnered with an international social welfare organisation to help increase the supply of these syringes to the Indonesian government, to aid the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination drives across the country.
The challenge
Before beginning the supply of syringes to the government, our customer ran into a few operational issues. Stuffing the trucks in the morning would mean the syringes could only be delivered to the government warehouse by late afternoon, which would lead to an unwanted delay. They also explored the possibility of stuffing the trucks in the afternoon or evening for delivery the following morning. However, this wasn’t an option either, as their warehouse closes at 4pm and the trucks wouldn’t have been fully loaded in time. Additionally, the company needed to present specific documentation before the stuffing process could begin, without which the trucks could not be dispatched from the warehouse.
The solution
Upon recommendation from the partner social welfare organisation, our customer approached Maersk Indonesia to help them find a suitable answer to the problem. Our team was able to achieve this through a combination of LCL (Less than Container Load) trucks and our intermodal service. The trucks would arrive at the company’s warehouse in the morning, for the loading to begin. Prior to their arrival, our team would have the documentation signed and stamped, so that there would be no administrative roadblocks, and the trucks could leave on schedule once the loading was done. The Maersk LCL service provided a second advantage, which is that the trucks wouldn’t need to be full to be dispatched. As a result, the team was able to load as many syringes as possible each day and send them across to the government centre before day’s end, ensuring a steady supply.
The result
Since the solution was implemented, the new process has been running smoothly, and the Indonesian government has been able to step up its vaccination efforts in the country. Supply of the product has increased significantly, and the company is aiming to not only provide enough syringes for Indonesia, but to also export around 150 million overall (the equivalent of around 200 containers) to other countries in Asia-Pacific and Europe.
The belief is that the solution will help considerably improve the vaccination efforts in Indonesia, as well as its neighbouring countries.
In recognition of their efforts, representatives from our customer and Maersk were invited to an official exportation event attended by the Minister of Health and the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment on 26 August 2021. This situation helped highlight the critical role of logistics in the public health sector. The Covid-19 situation in Asia-Pacific is still delicate, and vaccinations need to be distributed efficiently and in large enough numbers to help curb the further spread of the virus. Maersk is proud to have been able to play a role in helping bolster the supply chains in Indonesia and beyond, to help improve the availability of vaccines and help Indonesia in its ongoing battle against Covid-19.
